She was a mystery the first time she introduced herself. Now, three years later, she still is.
Rian took one last look at her compact. Hair in place, make-up even, lip gloss shiny. Smile, perfect. She took the long envelope from the passenger seat and checked for the contents. All the files she needed were there, her curriculum vitae and photography portfolio being the most important. Her application form for the spot of Film and AV Tech Instructor was clipped with the first two.
Everything's ready. All she needed to do is start walking towards the administrative building.
She stepped out of her car, a pink Honda Jazz with tinted windows and shiny crystal engraved license plate holder. She started walking, taking on a perfect grace shown by ballerinas that was remarkably so as she stood at almost 5'9". She tentatively brushed the sides of her blue dress to even out the crease that began forming while she was walking. Once she was out of the parking lot and into the lobby, she breathed out a sigh.
"Finally," she said, flipping her short strawberry blond hair. The sound of her three-inch heels clicked loudly against the marble floors, making her feel very conscious and anxious at the same time. Good thing is that there were a only a handful of people and they don't seem to notice her. It was a Saturday and classes were off for the weekend. She smiled to herself.
She opened the glass doors, the sign above which says: Office of the President. She felt grateful that her friend had given her the directions for this office beforehand. As it is her first time in the said location, she might have gotten herself lost.
She readied a smile for the attendant in front. "Hi, good morning. My name's Rian Garner. I have an appointment with the President," she said when the lady raised her head.
"Ah, yes, Miss Garner. The President and the others are waiting for you." The attendant stood up to lead her to the double oak doors of what Rian thought was the board room.
The others? "Uh, if I may just ask... the others?"
The attendant gave her a worried smile. "You are going to be interviewed by the President and the faculty, Miss Garner. Didn't anyone tell you that?"
Her face crumpled. "No one told me, actually."
"Well then. There's nothing much we could do now, is there? The President's waiting for you. Let's not keep him."
Rian nodded. She was confident enough for one interviewer, but for a whole bunch of faculty members? She wondered if it was standard procedure or it was just her luckiest day. The attendant opened the door. The gust of the air-conditioning system whipped slightly through her frame. She shivered.
"Feeling cold, Miss Garner?" the man at the head of the table remarked. He must be the President. "Please, have a seat. You can take the one at the other end."
She smiled slightly, and strode towards the end of the executive table. She passed a few expectant faces. There were about ten more people around the table, most of them men. She remembered some of them, first name basis.
Lui was on the right hand of President Rosen, a smug smile painted across his lips. Rae, his messed up hair already making a silent statement. The ever silent Nagi surveyed her with assessing eyes. Axel sat up, his usual disposition present. Gabby flashed her that encouraging smile. Do they remember her?
"I see that you weren't expecting the crowd?" President Rosen asked.
"Oh yes, sir, actually." Oh yes, sir, actually? Pathetic answer, Rian. "I thought..."
"I have got to apologize for that. Gabby here told me that you sort of...suggested it."
"Suggested...?" More of feared. "I figured it would be a possibility, sir, given the circumstance."
"Yes. And my granddaughter, well, she seemed fond of you. I deemed it necessary that my judgment be unclouded by familiarity, and my granddaughter wanted me to accept you for the position. That's why I called the rest of the faculty members to interview you."
"That's..." she wasn't able to finish.
"Can we start?" Lui piped up. He didn't wait for any confirmation when he started asking. "Introduce yourself. And start with the basics."
Ritchel Antonette Garner, age 21. Born on the 31st of March. I am now applying for a teaching job under the Film and AV Tech Department.
"Why Rosen?"
Hard. I don't know, actually. Rosen has a certain appeal to me. Plus, most people I know is here. I just don;t think they'd be able to remember me. And someone referred me.
"You said someone referred you. Who?
Reifer.
"Reifer?"
Yes. He had been an acquaintance. I was sort of involved in a cold case he was assigned to from way back. I have no recollection of what I was before until three years ago. He interviewed me.
"Cold case...?"
I would rather not talk about it, if you don't mind. It's complicated and I'm bound by law not to say anything. Sir?
"Let her be. Next question?"
"Vital statistics," Gabby snickered.
That's easier.
